Healing Childhood Attachment Wounds in New York City

Individual therapy for the relational patterns, attachment wounds, and trust issues that have been quietly running your life — whether you’re in a relationship or not.

Overview

How Relationship & Attachment Therapy Can Help You

As an attachment therapist in NYC, I work with adults who are carrying the weight of relational patterns they didn’t choose and can’t seem to shake. The way we connect with other people — the way we trust, love, fight, shut down, or reach for closeness — is shaped long before we have words for it. Our earliest relationships teach us whether people can be relied on, whether intimacy is safe, and whether we are worth showing up for. When those early lessons were painful, they leave a blueprint that follows us into every relationship we form as adults.

This is individual therapy — not couples therapy. But that distinction matters less than you might think, because many of the people I work with describe what could be called “couples therapy for one.” They are in relationships that feel stuck, painful, or disconnected — or they keep ending up in the same dynamic with different people — and they want to understand their own role in that pattern before bringing another person into a therapy room. Individual attachment work is often the most powerful place to start.

Fear of Abandonment

A persistent dread that the people you love will leave, pull away, or stop caring — regardless of what the evidence actually shows. It’s exhausting to live in that low hum of threat.

Emotional Unavailability

You and your partner keep having the same fight. Or the distance between you has grown and you don’t know how to close it. You want to understand your own side of that dynamic before — or instead of — couples therapy.

Closeness

You want intimacy and connection, but when you actually get close to someone, something in you panics, shuts down, or finds a reason to pull back.

Neglect

Growing up without the emotional presence you needed leaving you feeling invisible, unworthy, or like your needs were never quite enough to matter.

Childhood Wounds

The painful experiences from early life that quietly shape how you love, trust, and see yourself long after childhood is over.

Can’t Stop It

You’ve done the reading, you know your attachment style, you can name exactly what’s happening as it’s happening.

Relationship Therapy

My Value

Real change in your relationships starts with the relationship you build in this room.

Attachment wounds don’t heal through information alone. They heal through experience — through the lived, felt experience of being in a consistent, safe, attuned relationship where your needs are taken seriously and you don’t have to earn care. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes part of the healing process. And that is not a small thing.

Using ego state and inner child work alongside EMDR and attachment-focused therapy, we go beneath the surface-level patterns to the parts of you that learned early on what love and safety looked like — and help those parts experience something different. Attachment trauma therapy in New York is what I trained for, and it’s where I see the most profound, lasting change happen. The shifts in here ripple outward into every relationship in your life.

Attachment patterns were built over years — and changing them takes more than insight. This process is intentional, layered, and paced entirely around your readiness. We move carefully, because this work touches some of the most formative parts of who you are.

Healing attachment wounds often means revisiting the past with gentleness and curiosity. Through inner child work, Jessica helps you reconnect with the younger parts of yourself that learned to cope with neglect, emotional unavailability, and fear of abandonment. This work goes hand in hand with trauma therapy, addressing the deeper relational patterns that have followed you into adult relationships. FAQs

Attachment and relational patterns can feel deeply ingrained — like they’re just who you are. They’re not. They’re learned responses that can be understood, worked with, and genuinely changed. These questions are a starting point.

This is individual therapy — sessions are one-on-one with you alone. You don’t need to bring a partner, and you don’t need to be in a relationship to benefit. Many of my clients come to this work specifically as a kind of ‘couples therapy for one’ — they want to understand their own patterns, heal their own attachment wounds, and change their side of the relational dynamic before (or instead of) bringing another person into the room.

Attachment theory describes how our earliest bonds — with parents or primary caregivers — shape the internal models we carry into adulthood about whether people are trustworthy, whether intimacy is safe, and whether we deserve care. If those early bonds were inconsistent, painful, or absent, we develop protective strategies — clinging, withdrawing, shutting down, people-pleasing — that made sense then but cause real problems now.

This is one of the most common — and most frustrating — experiences people bring to this work. Attachment patterns live in the nervous system, not just in the thinking mind. They activate automatically, often before rational thought has time to intervene.

No — and this is an important distinction. Attachment wounds don’t require dramatic events. Emotional neglect, inconsistent caregiving, a parent who was physically present but emotionally unavailable, being shamed for having needs, or losing a parent early — these experiences leave real marks, even when they don’t fit a conventional idea of trauma.
